Interesting Facts About

San Francisco

San Francisco, the home of the Golden Gate Bridge, has been seen in countless films over the ages. It has made a name for itself all over the world and even if you haven’t had the opportunity to see it in person, you will have certainly heard of it. However, we have collected together a few facts about the infamous city that you probably never knew.

Unique Ecosystem

One fact you probably didn’t know, is that the city has its own micro-climate. Well, sort of. The city would appear to actually be made up of a few unique micro-climates. One minute you’ll be walking down a street in shorts and t-shirt, the next you’ll need to pop on a jacket. That’s right, temperatures can fluctuate from street to street – weird, isn’t it. People have even claimed that on their morning walks they have experienced everything from the freezing cold to the relatively warm. This is all part of San Francisco’s unique charm and wonder. So, our question would be: what on earth do people wear? Our advice would be to layer up if you’re planning a trip there and bring a variety of different clothes.

Karl the Fog

That’s right, the people of San Francisco have named their fog; it is called Karl. Karl is so ‘popular’ in fact, that it has its own Twitter account (@KarlTheFog_) This is probably the most endearing fact we have for you. San Francisco is really one of a kind and it is refreshing to see.

It is Tiny

Despite its huge impact on the film industry, San Francisco is actually very small. In fact, you can walk from one end of the city to the other in less than a day – which is great if you are traveling through and don’t have long in the city. In total, it measures at only 7 by 7 miles, so if you blink, you might just miss it!

Nakedness is Legal

We will give you a second to let that sink in. Yes, people are allowed to be completely naked in San Francisco – and people definitely exercise this right. There are some designated ‘naked spots’ where you can expect to find people in the nude, like Baker Beach (which is a nudist beach – just to save you a shock if you planned to visit there!) However, people do really just potter around naked – they even do their shopping in the altogether too. However, if you are planning to embrace your true from on your visit, please make sure you are aware of the laws surrounding this right. If you want to sit around naked in public, you have to make sure that you have something underneath you, for hygiene reasons. We recommend that you always check local laws and customs before visiting anywhere, especially if you are wanting to exercise specific rights like this one.

Unwritten Rules of Transport

Despite the area being very small, it is still famous for its public transport. However, there are some unwritten rules you must be aware of before stepping foot on San Francisco public transport. So, if you are planning a visit, take a read of the rules we have collected together:

When stood up, you must always stand on the right. This allows for people to walk freely on the left.

Don’t touch anything if you can help it – the public transport is used by thousands of people every day – so it isn’t the cleanest place ever.

Make sure to squeeze everyone in, even if it seems like there is no room left. It might be very daunting at first, but you’ll get used to it.

Like most places, it is only decent courtesy to give your seat to any elderly people, pregnant people or people with children – if not, you risk being stared at and mocked for the entire ride.

It is advised to avoid eye contact if you can help it and mind your own business – San Francisco is a busy place and mostly people want to get on with their lives without feeling stared at!

If you follow these basic unwritten rules on your visit, you’ll blend in like everyone else!

There you have it, a number of facts you never knew about the wonderful city of San Francisco. Some of them may have surprised you, others may have upset you. However, we feel that these facts bring the city to life that bit more.
